Martin Sonnenberg

I began my professional career with the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL in 1995, at the age of 17.  I spent three seasons there. I had 92 points in my third season with the Blades which earned me a tryout with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  This is where I signed by first NHL contract, I split this season between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Syracuse Crunch. I played on seven different AHL teams throughout my professional career.

Some of my most memorable and favorite highlights of my career are when I went to the Calder Cup finals with the Wilkes-Barre Penguins.  I got to play in the Spangler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. I went to the Stanley Cup finals with the Calgary Flames in 2004. Meeting and being coached one game in the NHL by Wayne Gretzky.

I played 63 NHL games between Pittsburgh and the Calgary Flames and one exhibition game with the Phoenix Coyotes. After several years in the AHL and NHL I signed with KalPa of the Finnish SM-liiga in 2006. I was named the captain of Kalpa, becoming the first foreign born captain in the league. In 2007,  I signed with HC Ambri-Piotta in the National League A of the Swiss hockey club. During my second season in Switzerland, I left and signed a contract with Timra IK of the Swedish league. I led the club with 42 points in 42 games. Despite wanting to continue with professional hockey I was forced to retire due to a reoccurring knee injury.

I have settled back in Wetaskiwin with my wife and five children. I have coached hockey for the past five years.  I have thoroughly enjoyed mentoring and teaching the game.  During this time, my brother Eric and I have established ME HOCKEY where we can pass on our skillset and our love for the game.  We look forward to developing and mentoring young hockey players to be the best they can be.
